Goldey-Beacom College 2022 Dean's Cup Award Winner Honored

Ira Shepherd (Newark, DE) was named the 2022 Dean's Cup Award winner at Goldey-Beacom College's 2022 Honors Day ceremony. The award was presented to Shepherd by Vice President for Student Affairs & Athletics, Dr. Charles Hammond, and Director of Residence and Student Life, Jocelyn Moses. Shepherd was nominated for the award for showing remarkable dedication to the Goldey-Beacom College community through his leadership, extra-curricular involvement, and service. Shepherd has been a catalyst in increasing campus pride among the community through engagement with his peers, and is an excellent example of student leadership by developing other leaders through his everyday actions.

William Bethard (Magnolia, DE) was named the 2022 Accounting Award winner at Goldey-Beacom College's 2022 Honors Day ceremony. Sidy Toure (Bamako, Mali) was named the 2022 Poole Memorial Excellence in Writing Award winner at Goldey-Beacom College's 2022 Honors Day ceremony. The award was presented to Toure by Provost, Alison Boord White and Associate Provost, Dr. Joel Worden. The late William Poole was an attorney-at-law, a trustee of the College and former Chairman of the Board. Toure was nominated by the College's faculty to receive the award for demonstrating overall writing excellence in terms of content, creativity, style, maturity of expression, awareness of purpose and audience, organization and correctness.

Dr. William Franta was an honorary life trustee of the College and a retired DuPont company executive. Bryan Horsey (Wilmington, DE) was named the 2022 Nelson Debater of the Year Award winner at Goldey-Beacom College's 2022 Honors Day ceremony. The award was presented to Horsey by Provost, Alison Boord White and Associate Provost, Dr. Joel Worden. The award was established in honor of retired professor Don Nelson, who began the debating program at the College. Horsey was nominated by the College's faculty to receive the award for an outstanding performance in a classroom debate.

Zahid Hossain (Newark, DE) was named the 2022 Perrone Award winner at Goldey-Beacom College's 2022 Honors Day ceremony. The award was presented to Hossain by Provost, Alison Boord White and Associate Provost, Dr. Joel Worden. Robert J. Perrone is a distinguished alumnus of the College. The Perrone Award has been endowed by Ray and Mildred Thompson to honor Mr. Perrone. Hossain was nominated by the College's faculty to receive the award for demonstrating an interest in a career in public accounting, showing leadership qualities, and actively participating in community service.

Courtney Kenner (Bear, DE) was named the recipient of the President's Award for Achieving Greater for the Graduate Division at Goldey-Beacom College's 2022 Honors Day ceremony. Kenner was presented with the award by the President of Goldey-Beacom College, Dr. Colleen Perry Keith. The President's Award for Achieving Greater is the most prestigious award a student at the College is eligible to receive. The award is presented to a student who demonstrated the true meaning of 'Achieving Greater' during their career at the College by nature of academic achievement and contributions to the process of education in the classroom; growth, as a person and a student, during their time at the College; and enthusiastic involvement, initiative, and leadership that contributed to the betterment of the College community.

Goldey-Beacom College's 2022 Male Most Valuable Player Named

Nazim Moore-Derry (Atlantic City, NJ) was named Goldey-Beacom College's 2022 Male Most Valuable Player at the 2022 Student-Athlete Awards ceremony. Moore-Derry excelled on the basketball court with deft shooting touch, the ability to get open when other teams know they have to stop him, underappreciated defense, and overall knowledge of both the game and his teammates. He ended among the nation's best with 20.1 points per game, 36.3 minutes per contest, broke the school record with 100 3-pointers, and scored at least 30 points seven times. He was named first team all-league in helping the Lightning get back to the CACC Tournament.

Goldey-Beacom College's 2021 Male Most Valuable Player Named

Mason Maxwell (Newfield, NJ) was named Goldey-Beacom College's 2021 Male Most Valuable Player at its 2022 Student-Athlete Awards ceremony. Maxwell enjoyed one of the greatest seasons at Goldey-Beacom by any athlete in any sport. As the baseball team's starting shortstop, he is a beyond gifted athlete who makes the game seem so simple with hitting for power and fielding that is eye-opening and effortless. The Lightning's Mr. Reliable also batted .588 in the NCAA Tournament in 2020, with two doubles, three home runs, and six RBIs. He was named Second-Team All-CACC and Second Team All-East Region.

Goldey-Beacom College Students Celebrated at Rho Alpha Sigma Ceremony

Resident Assistants at Goldey-Beacom College were honored for their service to the Rho Alpha Sigma Beta Omega Chapter during the 2021-22 academic year by the Student Affairs Office at its annual ceremony. Beginning in the Spring of 2021, Goldey-Beacom College joined Rho Alpha Sigma, the premier National Resident Assistant Honors Society, as its Beta Omega Chapter. During this past year, the Resident Assistants involved in Rho Alpha Sigma had a focus on community service. In just one year they were able to volunteer for over 60 hours of community service, assist in building a career closet so students can always have access to outfits for interviews, partnered with Sean's House in Newark, DE to help raise awareness for Mental Health on college campuses and so much more! Goldey-Beacom College's 2022 Female Most Valuable Player Named

Bianca Newsom (Edison, NJ) was named Goldey-Beacom College's 2022 Female Most Valuable Player at its 2022 Student-Athlete Awards ceremony. Newsom made her arrival this year with the softball team and has been a tremendous asset as the team's starting shortstop. She is among the team's best with a .369 batting average, 38 hits, 28 RBIs, 10 stolen bases and earlier this season notched an 11-game hitting streak. She is part of a program that is on the way up and her play continues to be more and more impressive each game.

Goldey-Beacom College's 2021 Female Most Valuable Player of the Year Named

Kayla Cook (Hebron, MD) was named Goldey-Beacom College's 2021 Female Most Valuable Player at its 2022 Student-Athlete Awards ceremony. Cook has been a major factor in the continued surge of the Track & Field program for the Lightning. Last season among her six meets, she was second in the 100-meter dash at the CACC Championship, and third in the 200-meter dash. She was also part of the 4x400-meter relay squad that ended fifth at the same meet, and was voted the team's most valuable player.

Goldey-Beacom College's 2022 Male Rookie of the Year Named

Logan McNelis (Sewickley, PA) was named Goldey-Beacom College's 2022 Male Rookie of the Year at its 2022 Student-Athlete Awards ceremony. McNelis picked up a victory in his last four appearances in which he has notched 10 strikeouts over 17 2/3 innings. He has the second-best ERA on the men's baseball team and his opponents are hitting just .262 off him.

Goldey-Beacom College's 2021 Male Rookie of the Year Named

Garrett Musey (Millville, NJ) was named Goldey-Beacom College's 2021 Male Rookie of the Year at its 2022 Student-Athlete Awards ceremony. Musey exploded on to the scene last year as the baseball team's starting first baseman and has made himself one of the area's top competitors. In the 2021 season, he was picked CACC Rookie of the Year, First-Team All-League, and Second-Team All-Region. He was among the nation's best with a .716 slugging percentage, homered in five straight games, hit a walkoff home run against Thomas Jefferson University, and cracked a huge two-run homer in a 2-1 NCAA Tournament win over nationally ranked Saint Thomas Aquinas.

Goldey-Beacom College's 2022 Female Rookie of the Year Named

Alyssa Ruggieri (Hockessin, DE) was named Goldey-Beacom College's 2022 Female Rookie of the Year at its 2022 Student-Athlete Awards ceremony. Ruggieri made a name for herself for the women's soccer team in being picked CACC Rookie of the YEar, First-Team All-League, and First-Team All-East Region. She led the CACC in assists and points, and was second in goals, all putting her among the nation's best. Ruggieri ended with a point in 11 different games and helped the Lightning get back to the CACC Championship.

Goldey-Beacom College's 2021 Female Rookie of the Year Named

Hannah Davis (Bethel, DE) was named Goldey-Beacom College's 2021 Female Rookie of the Year at its 2022 Student-Athlete Awards ceremony. Davis made an immediate impact in her first full campaign with the Lightning softball team, ending as one of three on the squad to start all 27 contests. She batted .325 and was among the league's elite with 13 stolen bases, 26 hits, and a .372 on-base percentage.

Goldey-Beacom College's 2022 Brian Conley Award Winner Named

Alanna Speaks (Dover, DE) was named the 2022 Brian Conley Award winner at Goldey-Beacom College's 2022 Student-Athlete Awards Ceremony. Head Athletic Trainer, Erin McCormick, and Director of Athletics, Jeremy Benoit, were on hand to present the Brian Conley Award sponsored by NovaCare Rehabilitation, which is awarded to the student-athlete who best displays courage, determination, and perseverance. The award is named for Brian Conley, who served as the Lightning's Cross Country coach for nine seasons before cancer took him from the College at April 21, 2015. A multi-sport athlete, Speaks fought her way back from multiple surgeries to return to the basketball court, and the Lightning await her return to the soccer field in the upcoming Fall season. Her prowess on the soccer field helped her in 2017 to be named CACC Rookie of the Year, First-Team All-Leage, Second Team All-Region, and to the CACC All-Tournament Team. The following year, she was picked First-Team All-CACC. In basketball, Speaks is perenially among the conference's elite in points, rebounds, steals, and minutes.

Goldey-Beacom College's 2021 Brian Conley Award Winner Named

Anthony DiMartino (Sicklerville, NJ) was named the 2021 Brian Conley Award winner at Goldey-Beacom College's 2022 Student-Athlete Awards Ceremony. Head Athletic Trainer, Erin McCormick, and Director of Athletics, Jeremy Benoit, were on hand to present the Brian Conley Award sponsored by NovaCare Rehabilitation, which is awarded to the student-athlete who best displays courage, determination, and perseverance. The award is named for Brian Conley, who served as the Lightning's Cross Country coach for nine seasons before cancer took him from the College on April 21, 2015. DiMartino fought his way back from surgery to excel on the baseball diamond. In the 2021 season, DiMartino made six starts, including one in the NCAA tournament, and was among Division II's elite in Wins, ERA, and Strikeouts. During the 2022 season, DiMartino notched at least five strikeouts on three occasions, including eight against Dominican University and seven versus Lincoln University (PA).

2022 Men's Student-Athlete President's Award Named

Tyler Jones (Lawrenceville, NJ) was named the 2022 Male Student-Athlete President's Award winner at Goldey-Beacom College's 2022 Student-Athlete Awards Ceremony. The President's Award is given to the student-athlete who best displays leadership, sportsmanship, and the overall effort to help support Goldey-Beacom Athletics. Representing the Men's Basketball team, Jones displayed each quality to its fullest throughout her career as a student-athlete, and was nominated for the award by Goldey-Beacom's President, Dr. Colleen Perry Keith.
